Halifax is one of Canada’s oldest cities, and with that comes ageing water and sewer infrastructure that needs renewal.
Over the next 30 years, Halifax Water plans to invest about $4 billion to upgrade infrastructure to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality water, wastewater and stormwater services to benefit our customers and the environment. Below are some of the projects currently underway at Halifax Water.

Capital projects identified by Halifax Water as potentially impacting customers during the construction phase have been included and depicted in our Capital Projects Web Application. The construction of these projects is planned to take place during the 2020-2021 fiscal year (April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2021). Projects listed as being in the category 'Halifax Water/HRM - Joint' will be carried out in conjunction with Halifax Municipality activities to minimize disruption for residents. Historical data layers for 2019-2020 and 2018-2019 have also been included. Hemlock Reservoir Project
In late June/early July 2020, Halifax Water, through its contractor, Landmark, will begin construction of a new water storage reservoir to better serve your community. The new water reservoir will be constructed at Halifax Water’s existing property on Masthead Court in Bedford.
Cogswell District Energy System
The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is redeveloping the existing Cogswell Interchange area located in downtown Halifax. As part of this redevelopment plan, HRM requested Halifax Water explore the feasibility of an Ambient Temperature District Energy System (ATDES) in the Cogswell area.
Caledonia Road Water Transmission Main Upgrade
Halifax Water through our contractor, Brycon Construction Limited, is upgrading the Caledonia Road Water Transmission Main. This transmission main plays a vital role in supplying Dartmouth communities with safe drinking water, and this upgrade work will ensure that it is able to continue to do so.
Russell Lake PS & Wastewater Pipe Upgrades
Halifax Water is working with contractors to complete wastewater system upgrades along portions of the Portland Lakes Trail and near Portland Estates and Russell Lake West.
Hornes Road & Area - Inflow & Infiltration Project
Halifax Water is performing inflow and infiltration reduction projects throughout HRM, including Hornes Road, Janice Anne Drive and Scott Drive. Repairs have been made to the public wastewater infrastructure in the street.
