As part of our ongoing commitment to communicating with customers and the local community, Halifax Water would like to inform you that we are upgrading the water main on Newton Avenue, Halifax, between Chebucto Road and Quinpool Road. This work is part of the utility's 30-year, $4 billion investment commitment to improving aging water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
Harbour Construction Limited will be completing this project on behalf of Halifax Water. The safety of staff, contractors and the public is our top priority during this work.
To ensure the safety of our communities and our staff, please maintain a safe distance when Halifax Water staff or contractors are working in your area.
During this work, Newton Avenue will be closed to all traffic in sections between Chebucto Road and Quinpool Road, and local traffic only on Newton Avenue. A detour will be in place. The sidewalk will remain open along one side of this work.
Preparation work for this project will begin on Monday, Apr 22, 2024, with the project expected to be completed in September 2024. Typical hours of work will be 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
This work will involve excavation in the street to install the new water main. Following pipe installation, the work areas will be restored – including repaving the impacted sections of the street (curb to curb) and any impacted property. See the attached map for the entire project area. Traffic control personnel will be on-site during this construction to manage traffic flows.
Some customers near this work will be connected to a temporary water supply system to maintain water service during this work. A separate communication will be shared with those customers. During this work, customers in the project area may experience temporary water service disruptions. The contractor will provide advance notice to the impacted customers for any planned water service interruptions. Wastewater and stormwater services will continue throughout this work.
