Recognizing a Scam

Halifax Water serves thousands of people in our region, and we work hard to protect your personal information. 

If you are contacted by someone claiming to represent Halifax Water, please know the following:

Halifax Water will never

  • Ask for the following personal information:
    • Credit card numbers, 
    • Banking information, 
    • Date of birth, 
    • Social insurance number, or 
    • Driver’s license master number 
  • Demand immediate payment directly over the phone 
  • Demand immediate payment by Interac e-transfer, bitcoin, iTunes Card, or any gift cards 
  • Use aggressive or threatening language on calls or in voicemails 
  • Contact you using instant messaging platforms such as Messenger or WhatsApp 
  • Attempt to sell you anything, including in-home water filtration or water purification systems

Halifax Water will

  • Notify you that you have a payment due with a phone call, a letter, or a door card
  • Encourage you to call our Customer Care Centre at 902-420-9287 to verify our identity
  • Verify that you are the account holder when starting a call with our Customer Care Centre using basic personal information, such as your full name
  • Send texts and emails that you have an outstanding balance; however, we will not include a link for payment 
  • Offer you a variety of payment methods that are accepted by Halifax Water 
  • Ask if you are, or want to, sign up for our online customer portal, Customer Connect
