Lake Major Returns to Voluntary Restrictions

Published: 1:13 PM | November 12, 2025
Updated: 9:06 AM | January 9, 2026

Due to the recent precipitation, Halifax Water’s source water supply has started to replenish and recover. As a result, Lake Major’s levels have increased by 70cm.  Effective immediately, all customers serviced by Lake Major will be returned to voluntary water restrictions.

Halifax Water is cautiously optimistic that water levels are slowly recovering; however, staff continue to monitor water supply levels. The amount of precipitation that occurs over the winter months will ideally provide enough water to fully recharge lakes across the region. Until then, all customers and residents are urged to follow voluntary water conservation measures until further notice.

The privacy and security of your personal account information is our top priority for Halifax Water. As we continue to improve access to your Halifax Water Customer Connect account, we are committed to introducing more effective online security mechanisms to help protect your information. As a result, on January 28, Halifax Water will be introducing Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) as part of the login process for the Customer Connect Portal.

What is 2FA?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security method that requires two forms of identification. This typically involves something you know (like your password) and something you have (like a one-time passcode sent to your phone or email).

Seasonal Disinfection

Published: 9:08 AM | November 3, 2025
Updated: 12:12 PM | November 3, 2025

In February 2015, Halifax Water undertook a stakeholder consultation in support of an application to implement a Seasonal Disinfection Program. Since 2017, Halifax Water has turned off the Ultraviolet (UV) systems annually between November 1 and April 30 at the Halifax, Dartmouth, Eastern Passage, and Herring Cove Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTFs). Prior to 2020, UV systems at all of these facilities were turned back on between December 24 and January 2 to provide disinfection during the Polar Bear swim in the Herring Cove area.
