As part of our ongoing commitment to communicating with customers and the local community, Halifax Water would like to inform you that we are beginning work on the Sawmill Creek Daylighting Project. This project is in partnership with the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Beginning on September 3rd, 2024, the contractor, Dexter Construction will begin installation of the by-pass pipe needed for construction to begin within the creek. Following the installation of the by-pass infrastructure, the contractor will begin installing a series of box culverts, adjacent to the Dundas Street and Alderney Drive intersection.
Once this portion of the project is complete, it will allow the realignment of the Dundas Street/Alderney Drive/Patuo’qn intersection to begin. In conjunction with the work outlined above, Dexter construction will begin utility adjustments, subgrade work and road reinstatement on Canal Street. Part 1 of this project is expected to be completed in July 2025. The second part of this project will begin in fall of 2025
This work is part of the utility's 30-year, $4 billion investment commitment to improving aging water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
To ensure the safety of our communities and our staff, please maintain a safe distance when Halifax Water staff or contractors are working in your area.
Typical hours of work will be 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday. There will be intermittent traffic impacts during Part 1 of the project in 2024, including lane reductions on Alderney Drive. Additional communication notices will be posted when needed regarding specific traffic interruptions and timelines
The following milestones will be achieved in two phases:
Part 1 (September 2024 – December 2024)
- By-pass Pipe installation
- Box Culvert and stone wall installation
- Subgrade work for Patuo’qn and Canal Street
- Connection of Alderney Drive/Patuo’qn intersection
Part 2 (Spring 2025 to Summer 2025)
- Asphalt and concrete reinstatement work on Patuo’qn, Alderney Drive and Dundas Intersection
- Subgrade work and Asphalt reinstatement on Canal Street.
- Landscaping and sidewalk installation
January 27, 2025 - Project Update
Beginning on Tuesday, January 28 until approximately February 28, 2025, Dexter Construction on behalf of Halifax Water be completing a stormwater system upgrades near Alderney Drive.
During this project, both northbound lanes of Alderney Drive from King Street to Mill Lane will be closed. Two-way traffic will be maintained in the southbound lanes. See the map for further details. Experienced traffic control personnel will be on-site to manage traffic flows.
February 18, 2025 - Project Update
Beginning on Tuesday, February 18, until approximately June 2025, Dexter Construction, on behalf of the Halifax Regional Municipality and Halifax Water, will be completing recapitalization and elevation changes on Canal Street.
The following traffic control plans will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until June 2025:
- Canal Street, between Portland Street and 11 Canal Street, will be closed.
- 35 Canal Street (Dartmouth Curling Club) and 176 Portland Street will have access to their properties via Mill Lane.
- All residents past 11 Canal Street will have to access their properties from Skokomul Street via a temporary access road.
- No street parking – there will be no street parking within the work limits.
