Halifax is one of Canada’s oldest cities, and with that comes ageing water and sewer infrastructure that needs renewal.
Between 2019 and 2049, Halifax Water plans to invest about $4 billion to upgrade infrastructure to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality water, wastewater and stormwater services to benefit our customers and the environment. Below are some of the projects currently underway at Halifax Water.
Cole Harbour Road Culvert Replacement Project
Beginning the week of August 16, construction work is expected to begin in this area. Hours of work will be Monday to Saturday, 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This work is expected to take approximately 8-10 weeks to complete.
Dartmouth & Area Water Supply Changes/Upgrades
We are making our customers aware in the communities of Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, Eastern Passage, North Preston, Westphal and Burnside that we have now completed phase 1 of critical infrastructure upgrade work at the Lake Major Water Supply Plant that supplies drinking water to these areas. This work began on October 29th and is now complete.
Cogswell District Energy System
The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is redeveloping the existing Cogswell Interchange area located in downtown Halifax. As part of this redevelopment plan, HRM requested Halifax Water explore the feasibility of an Ambient Temperature District Energy System (ATDES) in the Cogswell area. The ATDES would be constructed in conjunction with the overall Cogswell redevelopment project.
Russell Lake PS & Wastewater Pipe Upgrades
Halifax Water is working with contractors to complete wastewater system upgrades along portions of the Portland Lakes Trail and near Portland Estates and Russell Lake West.
Hemlock Reservoir Project
In late June/early July 2020, Halifax Water, through its contractor, Landmark, began construction of a new water storage reservoir to better serve your community. The new water reservoir is being constructed at Halifax Water’s existing property on Masthead Court in Bedford.
Ellenvale Run Rehabilitation Project - Phase 4
Stormwater flows through Ellenvale Run from Lemont Lake to Morris Lake. Phase 4 of this rehabilitation project focuses on replacing the retaining walls along the 95-metre portion of Ellenvale Run between the Belle Vista Drive/Waltdale Drive intersection and Ellenvale Avenue.
Ellenvale Run Rehabilitation Project - Phase 5
Stormwater flows through Ellenvale Run from Lemont Lake to Morris Lake. Phase 5 of this rehabilitation project focuses on replacing the retaining walls along the portion of Ellenvale Run between the Belle Vista Drive/Waltdale Drive intersection and Wanda Lane and continuing between Belle Vista Drive and Wanda Lane.
Ashdale Avenue - Water Main Renewal
Dexter Construction, on behalf of Halifax Water and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), will be undertaking work on Ashdale Avenue, Halifax. The Halifax Water portion of this work will include the entire replacement of the water main, replacing catchbasins and their connections to the stormwater system, and replacing a number of public wastewater laterals.
Howland Drive & Howland Court Water Main Renewal
ARCP Limited, on behalf of Halifax Water and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), will be undertaking work on Howland Drive and Howland Court. The Halifax Water portion of this work will include the replacement of the water main and any public or private lead service lines in the area. Customers with a lead service line will be contacted directly by Halifax Water with more information.
Spry Avenue Infrastructure Renewal Project
On behalf of Halifax Water, Harbour Construction Limited will be replacing the water main and sections of wastewater main on Spry Avenue this summer. Work is expected to begin in mid-June. This work will take place along the full length of Spry Avenue. The existing water main is near the end of its service life.
Drummond Court & Leaman Street Water Main Renewal
Sackville Trenching, on behalf of Halifax Water and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), will be undertaking work on Drummond Court and Leaman Street. The Halifax Water portion of this work will include the replacement of the water main and any public or private lead service lines in the area.
Hornes Road & Area - Inflow & Infiltration Project
Halifax Water is performing inflow and infiltration reduction projects throughout HRM, including Hornes Road, Janice Anne Drive and Scott Drive. Repairs have been made to the public wastewater infrastructure in the street.
