As part of our ongoing commitment to communicating with customers and the local community, Halifax Water would like to inform you that we are completing a sewer separation project on College Street, Halifax, between Cathedral Lane and Summer Street. This work is part of the utility's 30-year, $4 billion investment commitment to improving aging water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
Harbour Construction will be completing this project on behalf of Halifax Water. The safety of staff, contractors and the public is our top priority during this work.
To ensure the safety of our communities and our staff, please maintain a safe distance when Halifax Water staff or contractors are working in your area.
During this work, College Street will be closed to all traffic in sections between Cathedral Lane and Summer Street, and local traffic only on College Street. A detour will be in place. The sidewalk will remain open along one side of this work. There will be higher levels of noise in the area due to regular construction activity.
Preparation work for this project may begin as early as July 27, with the project expected to be completed in December, 2026. Typical hours of work will be 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
This work will involve excavation, rock breaking, installation of stormwater, water, and sanitary infrastructure, relocation of an existing gas main, and street recapitalization. Following the work, the area will be restored – including repaving the impacted sections of the street (curb to curb) and any impacted property. See the attached map for the entire project area. Traffic control personnel will be on-site during this construction to manage traffic flows.
Some customers near this work may be connected to a temporary water supply system to maintain water service during this work. A separate communication will be shared with those customers. During this work, customers in the project area may experience temporary water service disruptions. The contractor will provide advance notice to the impacted customers for any planned water service interruptions.
