Primary Function

The Water Treatment Plant Operator will work under the direction of the designated supervisor, who may or may not be on site, to operate water treatment plants, and perform maintenance of equipment associated with water supply plant facilities. The Operator will work 12-hour shifts, day and night shifts, or operate and maintain small systems plants at the location to which he or she is assigned.  The successful incumbent will administratively report to the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor at JD Kline but will be required to work at any of Halifax Water’s Water Supply Plants or Small Systems Plants on an as needed basis.  

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all facility mechanical equipment
  • Ensures all responsibilities are met as it pertains to the ISO 14001 compliant Environmental Management System for the entire scope of the certification and established standard operating procedures.
  • Control all operational processes during the designated shift period.
  • Check mechanical equipment, making adjustments as required.
  • Take samples and conduct routine tests for process control.
  • Transport and mix chemicals and operate equipment used for unloading chemicals.
  • Take daily readings and log any irregularities in the process operations.
  • Monitor and take daily readings of weather station instruments.
  • Maintain adequate records as required.
  • Perform maintenance checks on all equipment which form part of the treatment facility.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance as directed, on any equipment that forms part of the treatment facility.
  • Operate all equipment as well as additional equipment which may be acquired.
  • Maintain a tidy sanitary appearance of the water supply plant.
  • Work safely, obeying all codes and regulations.
  • Report all unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Perform on the job training of people from within operators bargaining unit, and of operators in training from other water supply organizations.
  • Conduct tours of water treatment plant facilities.
  • Perform other related duties required for proper operation of water treatment facilities.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to:    

  • Supervisor, Water Plants or Superintendent, Water Supply Plants, as applicable or their designate.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education:

  • Two year technical program related to Water Treatment. An equivalent combination of related formal education and experience in a water treatment environment may be considered.
  • Must successfully complete Operator-in-Training Water Treatment Certificate within six months of date of hire and pass the Level 1 examination within 12 months.  (The opportunity exists for Operators to progress to higher salary levels based on completion of specified criteria).
  • Must be willing to complete any further training which is available to operators of a water treatment facility.

Experience:

  • Previous experience related to the job.  Experience in the operation of water treatment facilities would be an asset.
Other Requirements

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License

This is a CUPE Local 227 Unionized position

Wage Rates: As per the collective agreement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be mechanically inclined and have an elementary understanding of chemistry and electronics.
  • Preference will be given to experience with pumps and mechanical equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of computerized environment, and familiarity with software pertinent to water treatment facilities would be an asset.
  • Must be prepared to wear protective clothing and equipment required for specific situations involved.
  • Must be willing to undergo immunization treatments, and any personal health condition checks which may be required.
