The Engineering Information Technician assists in the maintenance, updating, retrieval, display and dissemination of record information in its many formats within Halifax Water (HW) (hard copy plans, card indexes, GIS database or other applications) as well as production of engineering drawings and sketches. The Engineering Information Technician provides a broad range of technical services in support of GIS solutions and data.
Wage Rate: $77,309.38
- Utilizes CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) technology to produce engineering drawings from source information which may include field notes, record drawings, sketches, field survey data and base mapping. Creates and maintains both 2d and 3d data models in CAD and GIS.
- Prepares engineering design and record drawings for the Engineering and Technology Services Department in support of engineering capital program. Applies existing standards to obtain consistency and quality on output and reviews external CAD submissions for standards compliance.
- Contributes to annual engineering specifications review; prepares standard CAD templates for internal and external use.
- Research (from GIS database and engineering records) and delivers distribution and collection system information to HW departments and outside individuals or agencies. Facilitates data delivery to outside individuals or agencies following HW’s documented workflow.
- Assists in the maintenance of an organized filing system of record drawings and record information received as per drawing management workflows; establishes links between records and related spatial assets in GIS, regularly addresses drawing table quality control reports, and maintains legacy drawing relationships.
- Updates and maintains the HW’s corporate GIS database from record packages, helpdesk tickets and other records provided by the organization. Assists with data checking, quality control audits, follow-up reporting and peer review of updating projects.
- Provides support through the creation of products generated from GIS, CAD, and other engineering datasets. Products may include static maps/drawings (PDF), dynamic maps (web GIS maps/apps), plans, sketches, posters, charts, tables, reports, etc. Delivers products in accordance with Engineering Information service fulfillment targets. Production of these products may require the use of geo-processing tools and data analysis.
- Participates in the learning of the latest computer technology related to CAD and GIS through in-house and external in-person and/or virtual classroom training. Attends subject related conferences, pending approval. Participates in HW professional development opportunities (i.e., field trips, plant tours, lunch & learns, information sessions, etc.). May assist GIS Coordinator in training new staff on team workflows.
- Participates in requirements gathering exercises, training, regression testing, and User Acceptance Testing (UAT) of GIS / CAD upgrades, applications, and tools as they are developed; internally or externally. Adopts new GIS / CAD software, applications, tools, and workflows as they are implemented. Becomes familiar with and utilizes applicable GIS applications as they are developed.
- Assists Data Analysts to develop quality control measures to ensure data integrity which may include providing feedback, testing and implementation of data QC applications. Utilizes QC script reports and custom-built tools to review GIS updates completed by workgroup. Utilizes geoprocessing tools to review updates to GIS Data.
- Assists in the writing and production of documentation in support of GIS / CAD applications, tools, and workflows. May include test cases, user documentation, training material, workflows, etc.
- Participates in professional development assignments and opportunities. May include assignment to specific projects where sharing of GIS knowledge and experience may be required.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Diploma in geomatics discipline (GIS, Remote Sensing, Planning, Cartography) or diploma in CAD or equivalent related training and experience.
- Experience: Three years of related experience in GIS data maintenance, mapping and analysis or three years working in an engineering office providing CAD services.
Certificates / Licenses / Registrations:
- Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
- First Aid
- WHMIS
- Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements
Must have hands on experience with the following computer hardware/software:
- Strong computer skills an asset.
- General knowledge of GIS an asset.
- General knowledge of water
