The rehabilitation of the NWA sewer was completed in 2017

Halifax Water at this time of monumental achievement wishes to extent gratitude to the area residents and related stakeholders for being very accommodating and understanding of the need to complete this work. We appreciated your participation with the community consultations and response to the work notifications, which were aimed at keeping everyone informed of latest progress.

As well, we extent thanks to the Halifax Municipality area Councillors and to the Halifax Municipality Parks and Street Services department for their involvement throughout the work phases.

November 1st through December 5th

Key items completed:

  • CIPP lining activity has been completed. The last liner (13 in total) was completed, on schedule, December 4th and the sewer trunk was operational by the next day, December 5th. The full length of Zone 4, which comprised of approximately 827 meters of sewer, was lined for a grand total of 3,995 meter, for the project.
  • Follow-up reinstatement has been ongoing with most re-paving and landscaping work completed. Should you notice any incomplete reinstatement items at your property or within your area, please rest assured that any residual landscaping and other related reinstatement work will be finished up by work crews when the finer weather and more ideal work conditions return next spring.

September 26th through October 31st

Key items completed:

  • Lining work resumed on October 20th and by October 31st was completed over the entire length of Zone 3 (Ridgewood Drive to the Atlantic School of Theology (AST) area). There was approximately 943 meters lined over this period for a grand total of 3,168 meters (or 80%) of the total 3,995 meter length of the NWA sewer trunk section to be lined.
  • The scheduled lining process will remain idle until approximately mid-November once the necessary lining infrastructure is in place from the AST pump station MH76A location through to the last manhole MH93 near the Balmoral pump station. Only 823 meters of the NWA sewer trunk sewer section remains to be lined.
  • The rehabilitation of the 17 manholes required for access for CCTV (video) work and for the lining process is now 100% complete throughout Zones 1 through 4. The listing of the manhole access work completed includes:
    • 17 Completed: Zone 1: MH3, MH7, MH12 ,MH15, MH20, and MH24,  Zone 2: MH26, MH37, MH43 and MH43A, Zone 3: MH55A, MH59 and MH62A  Zone 4: MH76A, MH84, MH86A and MH93.
  • The CCTV work being performed by EmPipe has been completed from Zone 1 through to the mid portion of Zone 4; this work is required to gather information on sewer pipe measurements and identification of service interconnections. In total, approximately 4,000 meters of the NWA sewer trunk has been videoed for lining reference to date. This equates to approximately 90% complete of this total task.
  • The installation of the sewer lateral service interruption “crocks” to divert sewer flows during the lining process is ongoing in advance of lining into Zone 4. The crocks and connections previously installed in Zones 1 and 2 along the Quinpool Road through to Ridgewood Drive sections have been removed and the areas have been reinstated. This process will soon be underway in Zone 3 (Ridgewood Drive to the AST).
  • The installed by-pass pumping lines (dual 18” diameter HDPE) required to divert flows around the NWA sewer trunk to allow for the CIPP lining in Zones 2 and 3 will soon cease to be required. This bypass system, along with the temporary large pump set-ups, will be removed beginning on or around November 6th and these areas reinstated.
  • The CIPP liner fabrication is now underway for Zone 4.
  • The required tree-trimming and arborist work as pre-approved by Halifax Municipality remains ongoing as required.
  • All regulatory permitting required by Halifax Municipality Parks, Halifax Municipality Right of Way Services, CN and NSPI are now all in place. All project related traffic disruption notifications and work activity notices are being circulated as required and project signage being maintained in place.

August 29ththrough September 25th

Key items completed:

  • The CIPP lining activity has been ongoing and once again great progress has been made! The lining work resumed on September 11th and by September 22nd was completed over the entire length of Zone 2 and into a small section of Zone 3 (Coburg Road through to Ridgewood Drive areas). There was approximately 1,083 meters lined over this period for a grand total of 2,226 meters (or 56%) of the total 3,995 meter length of the NWA sewer trunk sewer section to be lined.
  • The lining process as was previously scheduled will currently remain idle until approximately mid-October when the necessary lining infrastructure is in place at the Belmont on the Arm MH 59 location and surrounding areas. 
  • Rehabilitation of 17 manholes required for future access for CCTV (video) work and for the lining process are essentially complete throughout Zones 1 to 4. This equates to approximately 95% of this total task. The details on the manhole access work completed and ongoing includes:
    • 16 Completed: Zone 1: MH3, MH7, MH12 ,MH15, MH20, and MH24,  Zone 2: MH26, MH37, MH43 and MH43A, Zone 3: MH55A, MH59 and MH62A  Zone 4: MH76A, MH84 and MH86A.
    • 1 Partially Completed (modifications in progress): Zone 4: MH93
  • The CCTV work being performed by EmPipe has been completed from Zone 1 through to Zone 3; this work is required to gather information on sewer pipe measurements and identification of service interconnections. In total, approximately 3,750 meters of the NWA sewer trunk has been videoed for lining reference to date. This equates to approximately 85% of this total task.
  • The installation of the sewer lateral service interruption “crocks” to divert sewer flows during the lining process is now ongoing in advance of lining into Zones 3 and 4. The crocks previously installed within Zones 1 and 2 from Quinpool Road through to the Ridgewood Drive section are currently in the process of being removed and these areas reinstated.
  • The installation of by-pass pumping lines (dual 18” diameter HDPE) required to divert flows around the NWA sewer trunk to allow the CIPP lining in Zones 2  and 3 was successfully installed from South Street through to the AST.
  • The CIPP liner fabrication is now underway for Zone 3.
  • The required tree-trimming and arborist work as pre-approved by Halifax Municipality remains ongoing as required.
  • All regulatory permitting required by Halifax Municipality Parks, Halifax Municipality Right of Way Services, CN and NSPI are now all in place. All project related traffic disruption notifications and work activity notices are being circulated as required and project signage being maintained in place.

August 1st through August 28th

Key items completed:

  • CIPP lining activity has begun and great progress has been made!
  • Lining work began on August 20th and by August 28th the entire length of Zone 1 (Armdale Roundabout through to Jubilee Road) was completed. This comprises approximately 1,140 meters (or nearing 30%) of the total 3,995 meter length of the NWA trunk sewer. The lining process will begin again in mid September in Zone 2, once the necessary lining infrastructure is in place on South Street. 
  • The entire length of the NWA trunk sewer (Zones 1 through 4) has now been cleaned and purged of sediment. The cleaning crew (Uni-Jet) wrapped up this operation on August 26th. This comprises approximately 4,400 meters of the full sewer length, essentially from the Armdale Roundabout to Point Pleasant Park. The two pumps stations situated along the sewer trunk, the AST and Balmoral pump stations were also cleaned by this process.
  • Rehabilitation of 17 manholes, required for future access for CCTV (video) work and for the lining process, are nearing completion in Zones 1 through 4. This equates to approximately 80% of this total task.  The details on the manhole access work completed and ongoing includes:
    • 10 completed : Zone 1: MH3, MH7, MH12 ,MH15, MH20, and MH24,  Zone 2: MH26, MH43, MH43A,  Zone 4: MH76A.
    • 6 partially completed  (modifications in progress):  Zone 2: MH37, Zone 3: MH59,  Zone 4: MH84, MH94, MH55A, and MH86A
    • 1 outstanding: Zone 3: MH62A
  • The CCTV work being performed by EmPipe has been completed from Zone 1 through to approximately 50% of Zone 3 (Marlboroughwoods area); this work is required to gather information on sewer pipe measurements and identification of service interconnections. In total, approximately 2,600 meters of the NWA trunk sewer has been videoed for lining reference to date. This equates to approximately 65% of this total task.
  • The installation of the sewer lateral service interruption “crocks” to divert sewer flows during the lining process is now ongoing in advance of lining into Zones 2 and 3. The crocks previously installed in Zone 1 along the Quinpool Road through to Jubilee Road section are currently being removed and these areas reinstated.
  • The installation of by-pass pumping lines (dual 18” diameter HDPE) required to divert flows around the NWA trunk sewer to allow the CIPP lining in Zones 2  and 3 are currently being installed from South Street through to the AST. Crews are currently installing these by-pass lines along Beaufort Avenue.  This activity is nearing 50% complete.
  • The CIPP liner fabrication is now underway for the Zone 2.
  • The required tree-trimming and arborist work as pre-approved by Halifax Municipality remains ongoing as required.
  • All regulatory permitting required by Halifax Municipality Parks, Halifax Municipality Right of Way Services, CN and NSPI are now all in place. All project related traffic disruption notifications and work activity notices are being circulated as required and project signage being maintained in place.

July 6th through July 31st

Key items completed:

  • Cleaning of the NWA sewer trunk is now completed in Zones 1 and 2. The cleaning crew (Uni-Jet) is currently halfway into Zone 3 (the Marlboroughwoods area). In total, approximately 3,230 meters of the trunk sewer has been cleaned and purged of sediment to date. This equates to approximately 75% of the full sewer length.
  • Rehabilitation of 9 of the 17 manholes required for future access for CCTV (video) work and lining are now essentially completed in Zones 1 through 4. This equates to just over 50% of this total task.
  • The CCTV work being performed by EmPipe has been completed in Zone 1 and approximately 50% in Zone 2 (to the South Street area); this work is required to gather information on sewer pipe measurements and identification of service interconnections. In total, approximately 2,080 meters of the trunk has been videoed to date. This equates to approximately 50% of this total task.
  • Installation of the sewer lateral service interruption “crocks” has begun. These crocks are currently being installed along the Quinpool Road in preparation to divert sewer flows during the upcoming lining process. Seven of the required 24 crocks have been installed to date.
  • The liner fabrication is now underway for the Quinpool Road sewer sections. The lining operation which will begin near the Armdale Roundabout remains scheduled to start in late August.
  • The required tree-trimming and arborist work as pre-approved by Halifax Municipality remains ongoing as required.
  • All regulatory permitting required by Halifax Municipality Parks, Halifax Municipality Right of Way Services, CN and NSPI are now all in place. All project related notifications are being circulated as required and project signage is now in place.

June 21st through July 5th

Key items completed:

  • Zone 1 – NWA sewer trunk cleaning completed (approximately 960m) 22% of total project length
  • Zone 2 - NWA sewer trunk cleaning begun and ongoing
  • Rehabilitation of 5 manholes for future access for CCTV (video) work and lining is currently underway within Zone 1 and soon to begin in Zone 2
  • CCTV work was begun in Zone 1 on July 5th; this work is required as part of the pipe preparation work in advance of lining for detailed sewer pipe easurements and identification of service interconnections
  • Resident interviews and site visits required along the NWA trunk easement are ongoing and are essentially 75% complete
  • Required permitting by HRM Parks, HRM Right of Way Services, CN are essentially now all in place
  • Required tree-trimming and arborist work has been pre-approved by HRM; activities scheduled to begin early next week
