Seasonal Hydrant Maintenance

This may cause discoloured water for customers in the areas of this work
Published: 8:50 AM | March 24, 2020

Halifax Water crews will be completing routine seasonal hydrant maintenance across Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) for the next several weeks.

This maintenance, which is required to ensure the operation of the hydrants throughout the system, includes turning hydrants on and off. This may cause discoloured water for customers in the areas of this work. While the discoloured water remains bacteriologically safe, it is recommended you not use discoloured water for drinking, preparing food and beverages, or laundry.

If you experience discoloured water, run the cold water at one faucet for about 10 minutes. You should see the water clear.

Do not use the hot water faucet since this will draw discoloured water into your hot water heater/tank, which could make the problem worse. To learn more, visit: www.halifaxwater.ca/discoloured-water.

Halifax Water crews will be able to meet the current 2 meter (6 foot) social distancing requirements during this work.

We apologize for any inconvenience this necessary infrastructure improvement work may cause.
