Primary Function

The Operations Technologist - Engineering Approvals, reporting to the Project Manager - Engineering Approvals, provides the provision of inspecting the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to the Halifax Water Systems.  This includes the collection, production and retrieval of record information.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Halifax Water’s Occupational Health and Safety Program Manual.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the inspection of installations of Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to, or part of, the Halifax Water Systems.
  • Responsible for the collection, production and retrieval of record information, associated with Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to, or part of, the Halifax Water Systems. 
  • Ensure installations of Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Service Connections and appurtenances, attaching to, or part of, the Halifax Water Systems adhere to the requirements of Halifax Water.
  • Review and complete Service Connection cards for adherence to the Halifax Water Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications required of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to, or part of, the Halifax Water Systems.
  • Review acceptance packages for adherence to the Halifax Water Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specifications required of new multi-unit, industrial commercial and institutional Service Connections including the testing, certification and record drawing information.
  • Assist in the locating of the Halifax Water infrastructure as requested.
  • Responsible for the input of record information, collected by global position system devices and surveying equipment, into Halifax Water databases.
  • Liaise with customers, developers, consultants, contractors, Halifax Water staff and other outside agencies.
  • Undertake Halifax Water Systems inspections, testing, commissioning, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Reports to: Inspections Coordinator - Engineering Approvals

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education:

  • Post-Secondary diploma in Civil Engineering Technology with Certified Engineering Technologist designation.

Experience:      

  • Minimum five years of experience in a municipal engineering field.
Other Requirements
  • Must be a registered member with TechNova as a Certified Engineering Technologist.
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
    • First Aid
    • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS)
    • Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of Halifax Water’s Rules and Regulations, Design Specification and Supplementary Standard Specification.
  • Through knowledge of Provincial and Municipal acts, by-laws, and legislation relating to the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to the Halifax Water Systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of national, provincial and municipal standards, specifications, policies and guidelines relating to the installation of Service Connections and appurtenances attaching to the Halifax Water Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability in municipal engineering computer applications are essential. 
  • Demonstrated ability in Global Position Systems data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to use surveying equipment.

 

Hours of Work: As per Collective Agreement

Wage Rate: As per Collective Agreement. Newly ratified salary of $80,811.20 annually based on 37.5 hours a week.

This is a CUPE Local 1431 Unionized position.
