Primary Function
- Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Metering, or designate, this position involves customer relations wherein the general work includes connecting and disconnecting metered water service, investigating customer inquiries, meter reading, enforcing collection procedures and repairing metering equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Complete all appointments for water connections, reconnects, disconnects, meter reads, and repairs.
- Install, maintain and repair metering equipment, such as meters, remote registers, Encoder Receiver Transmitters (ERTs) etc.
- Carry out field collection activities for overdue accounts as required.
- Maintain records related to collection work and make recommendations regarding disconnection of service.
- Collect meter readings for both residential and non-residential accounts using a hand-held computer, or manually as required.
- Conduct field investigations for high consumption, service line leak detection, theft of service, reverse flow, vacant properties, etc.
- Complete any required reports or records and provide analysis.
- Perform general office duties including pick ups and deliveries.
- Complete and maintain forms, records and service orders as required.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of Halifax Water Design Specifications related to meters.
- General knowledge of Automated Metering Infrastructure and trouble shoot issues.
- Perform such other related duties as may be assigned.

- Report to: Supervisor of Metering
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Education:
- Grade 12 or NS Department of Education Equivalent.
- Experience:
- One-year previous plumbing, metering, mechanical, or electrical experience.
Other Requirements
- Valid N.S. Driver’s License.
- Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
- First Aid
- Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS)
- Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have a high degree of ability to deal courteously and competently with customers.
- Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to work proficiently with figures and detailed records.
- General knowledge of function of meter equipment.
- Ability to meet established deadlines and deal with varying workloads.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of departmental procedures related to metering.
- Must have general knowledge of computerized environment and be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must maintain Halifax Water vehicle in a clean, neat and tidy manner.
