Primary Function

The Environmental Technologist - Environmental Management System (EMS) is a core member in the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System team and responsible for assisting in the of oversight and delivery of the Environmental Management System, and associated certifications within the ISO 14001 standard for Halifax Water. They contribute to the key objective of delivering services that protect public health and the environment.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Halifax Water’s Occupational Health and Safety Program Manual.
 

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists the EMS Program manager with initiatives, and develop, implement, and administer programs and projects to improve the performance of Halifax Water’s wastewater, water, and stormwater systems relative to legislated and corporate environmental objectives.
  • Understand, support, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, and regulations. Stay updated on all Halifax Water’s compliance obligations related to the EMS (Approvals, Global Harmonized System, Environment Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods).
  • Ensure the EMS requirements are established, implemented, and maintained in accordance with Halifax Water’s own requirements and the requirements of the ISO 14001 international standard. 
  • Assist with compliance, surveillance, and expansion of scope audits to ensure that they meet the requirements of Halifax Water’s own requirements and the requirements of the ISO 14001 international standard. 
  • Coordinate with departmental and facility managers, assist with the development of facility specific standard operating procedures and ensure that all necessary personnel are trained as required.
  • Assist in managing the investigation of environmental issues and assist with remediation of corrective actions corrective actions to resolve problems involving the collection of information, management of staff activities and resources, preparation of reports.
  • Assist in Incorporating Halifax Water’s Climate Action Plan into the Environmental Management System.
  • Assist in implementing other ISO certifications for other standards.  
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education:

  • Post-Secondary education with a focus in Environmental Studies, Engineering Sciences, Water Resources.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in environmental/municipal engineering.
Other Requirements

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:

  • Registered member, or eligible for membership, as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with TechNova. 
  • Must possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
    • First Aid
    • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS)
    • Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements
       
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of HRWC Act, HRWC Regulations, HRM Charter and HRM By-Laws and Policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of national, provincial, and municipal procedures, standards, specifications, and guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant federal, provincial, and municipal acts, regulations, policies standards and guidelines.
  • Understanding of or experience in ISO standards.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing solutions to environmental problems.
  • Excellent leadership, motivational and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of initiative, and ability to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with others effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and effectively with a broad range of stakeholders, including the public, elected officials, community interest groups, regulators, government representatives, developers, consultants, contractors, lawyers, and insurers.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively perform as a member of cross-functional teams.
