Primary Function
  • The Database Administrator is responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of Halifax Water’s database systems. The person will be a key technical resource to design and implement database solutions that maximize the value of the organizational data assets, while working with multiple sources of databases that can generate information and knowledge about Halifax Water operations.
Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Install, upgrade, and patch the database management software.
  • Create and manage database structures to store and manage data effectively.
  • Ensure corporate data is readily available to Halifax Water technology systems, permitting Halifax Water to reliably serve its clients and allow timely and accurate decision making.
  • Develop, enhance, and optimize database schemas, semantic models, and queries.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain database triggers, database links, stored procedures, and interface routines/scripts.
  • Design, prepare and execute database backup and recovery, and disaster recovery procedures to ensure Halifax Water is protected against loss of corporate data.
  • Monitor system performance and tune databases to optimize responsiveness and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain database documentation.
  • Implementation and maintenance of database security protocols to ensure compliance with security standards and protect against cyber threats.
  • Develop and implement data administration policy, standards, and models.
  • Participate in the creation of policies and procedures for network and/or Internet database access and usage and for the backup and recovery of data.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement to other technology systems professionals regarding the collection, availability, security, and suitability of data.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Reports to: Data & Integration Coordinator

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Education:
    • Computer Science / Information Technology technical diploma or related discipline. Other equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in database administration and database management systems with emphasis on MS SQL Server.
Other Requirements

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:

  • ITIL Foundations Certification, must be willing to obtain within 1 year of obtaining position.
  • Microsoft Certification in Databases considered an asset.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
    • First Aid.
    • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS).
    • Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Expertise in SQL and Transact SQL and the skill to create complex queries and fix problems with database schema design.
  • A high degree of technical ability with at least 5 years in Windows environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong project planning, tracking and management skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of programming and programming concepts
  • Knowledge in the areas of water distribution and wastewater collection systems would be considered an asset
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
