Perform compliance-related field analyses and sampling for wastewater collection systems, treatment plant influent and effluent monitoring, and water treatment and distribution systems, and in support of field investigations for infrastructure systems and source or receiving waters. Submit samples for lab analysis, and evaluate results. Investigate water quality and quantity issues and recommend methods and procedures for water sampling and testing. Water refers to source water, wastewater, stormwater, surface or ground waters, discharges and receiving waters.
- Carry out routine sample collection and field analyses as required by regulations, permits and approvals, from collection system, water/wastewater treatment plant and distribution system locations, stormwater systems, and receiving waters.
- Perform data entry for the utility’s WaterTrax and other water quality/quantity databases as required. Use the system to produce charts, graphs and reports, and assist other staff with the maintenance and development of the system.
- Perform emergency water quality sampling in response to water quality/quantity events or collection, distribution, treatment and supply system emergencies as required.
- Assist Pollution Prevention and Environmental Engineering staff with system investigations (for example: treatment plant upsets, abnormal influent, inflow/infiltration sources, receiving water characterizations) and emergency release responses, including determination of appropriate sampling locations and methods.
- Operate and maintain field water quality equipment and supplies as well as collection, distribution and treatment system water quality/quantity instruments.
- Perform permit compliance and other scheduled work of other staff in their absence.
- Establish and maintain comprehensive record keeping systems as required.
- Carry out work required for various sampling and monitoring programs which may be developed, such as disinfection by-product monitoring, biological monitoring, CSO/SSO monitoring, and others, including those which may require sampling outside of normal work hours. Participate in the development of such programs.
- Work safely, obeying all codes and regulations and report all unsafe acts and conditions.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Grade 12 plus completion of a two year technical program in Environmental Sciences with specialization in water, wastewater and stormwater quality and quantity sampling and monitoring; or
- Two years post secondary diploma in microbiology or chemistry.
Experience:
- 3 years practical experience in water, wastewater and stormwater quality and quantity measurement, sampling, laboratory and field testing and analysis.
- Including previous experience with similar duties and working environment.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- Must possess a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have a basic understanding of water quality chemistry and related instrumentation obtained through required experience or training.
- Must have a good understanding of proper sample collection and handling procedures, and field and laboratory analysis methodology.
- Experience with pumps and mechanical equipment would be an asset.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must have a working knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheets, and word processing software and web applications.
- Must be prepared to wear protective clothing and equipment required for specific situations involving water and wastewater, and work outdoors under various weather conditions.
- Must be willing to undergo immunization treatments, and any personal health condition checks which may be required.
