This position requires the operation and maintenance of sewage pumping stations. Operation of equipment and tools in difficult conditions in wastewater environment, inside and out is essential. The incumbent will be subject to confined spaces, noise, vibrations, odors, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, and emergency call-outs after normal working hours. By working safely and cooperatively with others, employees in this classification contribute to meeting the operational objectives of Halifax Water.
- Perform and develop schedules and preventative mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves, piping and standby engines.
- Clean stations, wet wells, valve chambers, and holding tanks.
- Load and unloads equipment and materials as required.
- General care, maintenance and safe operation of assigned equipment and tools.
- Order supplies and materials as required.
- Provide written and verbal reports concerning daily work activities.
- Must be willing to work overtime for emergency call-outs.
- Perform related duties as required including all the general duties of a laborer.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- Grade 12 or equivalent and the completion of technical training in a mechanical discipline and industry training in wastewater treatment pollution
- A minimum of one year of experience working in pumps/motors/process controls
- Must successfully complete Operator-In-Training Certificate within two months of appointment and must write and pass Class I Wastewater Collection Operator Certification within 6 months of appointment
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- Must have valid NS Driver’s Licence with good driving record. Must provide a current driver’s abstract.
- A good working knowledge of pumps and motors, mechanical systems and motor.
- Good knowledge of hydraulic pumping systems and standby generators.
- Basic knowledge of computers, PLC’S, radios, and related devices.
- Must have training in Entry into Confined Spaces.
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Must have a good attendance and work record.

Working Conditions:
- Capable and willing to work both inside and outside in varying weather and conditions.
- Indoors & out in dust, fumes, volatile organic compounds, noise, heat, cold.
- Medium to Heavy Workload - May be required to work alone.
- Required to enter and work in confined spaces in varied body positions to access pipes, valves, machinery- kneeling, crawling, forward bending, twisting, forward and/or above shoulder reaching.
- Must be capable of safely accessing and egressing confined spaces with safety gear using Duo Safety Corporation ladders rated at a maximum load of 750 lbs. These confined spaces have a minimum manhole access of 27 inches in diameter.
- May be required to wear respiratory equipment, depending on environmental conditions. Workers are required to wear a full body harness when working in underground/ enclosed areas.
